Chapter 4

We toppled into the car, him beneath me, landing flat across the back seat. Winded, I took a second to regain my composure, and in that moment’s pause, he grabbed me and kissed me again, stealing the air from my lungs. I’d erroneously thought that his fire had already burned itself out, and that with just a little coaxing, I could take control and alleviate whatever was bothering him.

Now, I wasn’t so sure.

The kiss left me crazy for him, and even as I gasped to recover the air I’d lost, I gave myself to the kiss. Neither of us was in clear control now—our tongues met, our teeth clacked, and our lips crushed together. He rooted a hand in my hair and tugged, and I held him firm to the bench, rolling my hips so he could feel how fucking hard I was for him.

Earlier that evening, he’d tucked his shirt into the waistband of his jeans. It hung over the side of the bench now, brushing against the leather seats and in the way of my hand as I tried to get a grip to reposition myself. I snatched it and shoved it onto the floor of the vehicle, only for my fingers to brush against something unusual—plastic.

Some people used their cars like garbage cans, throwing junk into the back seat and leaving it wherever it landed, but Damien’s car wasn’t like that. The back bench was detailed and neatly kept, not a crumb wedged between the cracks, and while I hadn’t been in the vehicle long, I got the feeling he didn’t leave trash strewn across the floor, either. Curious, I broke the kiss to reposition myself and stole a glance at what it was.

My heart leapt into my throat.

Lube. A bottle of it. Had Damien tossed it back there in anticipation of emergency use later that night, or was it left over from a now-forgotten lover who’d been a little too zealous? Whatever the case, I was glad to have it.

It looked like we weren’t going to need to go anywhere tonight—I was going to take Damien in the back seat of his car.

“You don’t need this, do you?” he asked, using the distance between us to do some good. His hand had found its way to the buckle of my belt, and with a yank, he tugged it open, then thumbed the button of my fly. “You’re not going to need this, either. In fact, your jeans are going to have to come off. I’m not going to be able to own your ass if you’re covered up in denim, now am I?”

“Back at it, huh? I thought you’d learned better by now.” I left the lube where I’d found it, focusing instead on Damien. He’d propped himself up on an elbow to get a better reach, and undid the button of my fly without ceremony. The bright flames he’d hidden behind before were starting to burn out, but I was starting to doubt they’d ever be extinguished.
